May to shelve 'equality duty' on councils
The government will drop Labour's proposed law requiring councils to tackle social deprivation, equalities minister Theresa May is to announce.
The "social-economic duty", part of predecessor Harriet Harman's Equalities Bill, had been opposed by the Tories.
Mrs May is expected to argue for an "intelligent" approach, rather than setting targets and regulations.
She is also expected to say that old convictions for consensual gay sex will not appear on criminal checks.
The Equalities Bill gives public bodies in England and Wales, including councils and health authorities, a new social-economic duty - something that already exists in Scotland.
