Equality Act 2010 � changes now in force
The Equality Act 2010 (�the Act�) broadens the protection from discrimination afforded to employees in the workplace. It introduces several new measures which will be of interest to employers.
The provisions in the Act discussed below came into force on 1 October 2010. The Act generally consolidates much of the existing legislation, and is seen as being intended to strengthen and introduce greater certainty to equality law. The Act retains the �protected characteristics� from the previous raft of legislation, but extends the protection afforded in respect of some of these characteristics.
