Equality Act 2010 creates new weapon in discrimination battle
Following her removal as a presenter of the BBC show Countryfile last autumn, Miriam O�Reilly launched proceedings against the broadcaster for sex and age discrimination. TV presenter Selina Scott had previously sued Channel Five for the same thing. Both argued their employers had discriminated against them as older women.
At the time, the two women had to bring separate claims for sex and age discrimination. But the new Equality Act, which received royal assent in April, includes a provision that will make it easier for such employees to argue they have suffered discrimination over a combination of factors - in their case, age and sex.
