The Equality Act 2010 � what does it mean for employees?

The Equality Act - the single biggest piece of discrimination legislation created in this country - draws together all the important anti-discrimination laws introduced in piecemeal fashion since the Seventies. Its overarching ambition is to simplify and standardise the law to make it easier for people to understand, and so, hopefully, to follow.

The process of reviewing and harmonising the legislation has been lengthy, beginning with the Government�s Discrimination Law Review in 2005. In the meantime, there have been many calls for changes to the existing legislation to advance the rights of individuals. So the Equality Act does not simply represent a tidying-up exercise but also incorporates many new rights and remedies to protect individuals from discrimination.
