Diverse needs

New legislation means public sector buyers will have to promote equality through procurement. David Hansom looks at what this means when putting deals out to tender

Public procurement has always been about equal treatment. But thanks to the new Equality Bill, the contracting authorities will have to ensure another type of equality is at the forefront of tenderers� minds.

There will be a specific requirement for public bodies to promote equality and diversity through their procurement. It is not clear how this must be achieved, but it will be important this requirement is balanced against the obligations imposed under the public procurement rules.
