Why we still need race discrimination laws

How our legal framework underpins a diverse workforce

Nigel Farage, leader of political party UKIP, commented recently on the need to reform Britain�s anti-discrimination rules in a Channel 4 documentary �Things we won�t say about race that are true�. He claimed that employers are currently �not allowed to choose between a British-born person and a person from Poland� and that such a state of affairs is �ludicrous�.

Employers are not currently obliged to take on Polish workers against their will. While it is true that employers may be able to take positive action as a proportionate means of tackling under-representation of a particular minority group within their workforce, the Equality Act 2010 provides that they may only do so if it can be accomplished without discriminating against others.
