Will the Equality Act make everyone equal before the law? Wait for May 6 . . .

The passage of the Equality Act last week, which comes into effect in October, marks the culmination of 40-odd years of progressive legislation to create fairness between groups.

Having started with race and gender, our society’s thinking about fairness under the law has expanded to include sexual orientation, religion and belief, disability, caring responsibilities and age. Whether this left any room for the individual’s own personal identity is maybe a matter for philosophical debate. But the result was nine important pieces of discrimination legislation and more than 2,500 pages of guidance and statutory codes of practice.
