OVERVIEW
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills are pivotal to the UK’s economic growth and development, as recognised in the Government’s 2017 Industrial Strategy which is planning to invest an additional £406 million to address the skills shortage.

Compounding this is the lack of gender equality across STEM education, employment and research, with the February 2019 statistics from the Department for Education (DfE) highlighting that only 32% of girls say that STEM is their best subject, in contrast to 60% of boys. Moreover, the 2018 Women in Science and Engineering Campaign (WISE) Workforce Statistics report demonstrated that women still only represent 22% of the core STEM workforce.

In addition, the National Audit Office (NAO) 2018 Delivering STEM Skills for the Economy demonstrates that women only make up 8% of STEM apprenticeship starts, despite representing 50% of apprenticeship starts overall, 42% of STEM A-Level entries, and 38% of undergraduate STEM courses.

Addressing the under-representation of women in STEM fields is a significant challenge, with the inequalities beginning early in the education system and continuing to post-university level. As the key organisation responsible for the majority of STEM skills interventions, the DfE has appointed a dedicated lead to implement solutions to overcome these barriers, including investing £170 million in a new network of Institute of Technology (IoTs).

There is a pressing need for schools, colleges and universities to find innovative ways of challenging misconceptions around STEM studies and careers to drive parity of esteem between the genders.

This event will provide attendees the invaluable opportunity to gain updates on the latest strategies from senior policymakers on how to overcome challenges in encouraging girls to pursue further studying and employment in STEM fields. In addition, participants will benefit from engaging best-practice case studies and insightful discussions demonstrating the range of support and opportunities they can access to drive improvements of representation of women in STEM.
