Abolishing default retirement age a ‘step too far’

According to a survey by law firm, Davies Arnold Cooper, the abolition of the default retirement age (DRA), as proposed by Equalities Minister, Harriet Harman, and backed by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) this week is unpopular with businesses, with 70% of employers polled in a recent survey against the idea. In contrast, opinion was almost equally divided when asked about support for an increased DRA – 45% in favour and 55% against.
