Improving equality at work for BME employees

This conference will examine the further steps that can be taken by government, employers and others to improve opportunity and equality at work for people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

Policymakers, businesses and their advisors, and other stakeholders will discuss issues around discrimination, careers advice, improving recruitment practices and tackling barriers to greater diversity in leadership positions.

It follows the independent review of Race in the Workplace by Baroness McGregor-Smith, which found that employment rates for people from BME backgrounds are 12 per cent lower than their white counterparts, with just six per cent reaching top-level management positions.

Delegates will consider the recommendations of the review - and issues for their implementation - including increased transparency over diversity data, the publication of ambitious five-year targets and aspirations for large employers, and mandatory unconscious bias training for all organisations with over 50 employees, as well as further action that could be taken in this important area for policy.
